Dear Friends, Family, and Caregivers of Awesome Opequon Campers,
Thank you for the opportunity to get to know this amazing group of young people! Camp is off to a great start, with lots of fun happening every day.
After campers were dropped off on Saturday, we got to all meet each other, share a delicious dinner, and play a few games to get acquainted before cozying up in our cabins for the night. On Sunday, campers spent some time in their unit groups, getting to know each other and preparing for their big adventure trips. In the afternoon everyone went down to the pool for swim checks, games and activities and after dinner we had our Sunday evening fire circle, where we sang songs together and considered the query, “How do we greet the unknown? How do we open ourselves to wonder?” Campers and staff shared brilliant reflections and went to bed still pondering.
On Monday, each unit group headed out on their trips. Unit 4 hiked from Gathland State Park to Harpers Ferry. Units 1 and 3 each hiked from different parts of the Appalachian Trail to Crescent Rocks where they went rock climbing and saw some beautiful views. Unit 2 spent their trip canoeing on the Antietam Creek and the Potomac River.
On Wednesday we welcomed everyone back to camp and heard their tales of adventure and friendship around the fire. We spent Thursday doing activities together in camp, and then dove into our first set of three day workshops on Friday. Workshops this week include bread making, nature dance, tarot card design, camp fashion design, and a physics egg drop workshop. We can’t wait to see what kind of magic is happening in each workshop when they share their experiences and creations during our Sunday Art Walk!
We are thrilled to be here and ready for another great week of camp!
Love & Light,
The Opequon Quaker Camp Staff
